P1: Interpreting The Brief

Who are the BBC?

The BBC is the British Broadcasting Corporation, who were found in 1922 but started broadcasting television in 1936. The BBC was created to make content that the public could watch as long a they paid a TV license. It is now known as a public service organisation who aim to inform, educate and entertain. The first director that led the way for the BBC was John Reith who's goal was to use television to educate the masses.

What is BBC3?

The BBC3 channel was launched in 2003 it was launched to create innovative programming to a target audience of 16 - 34. BBC3 became known for having a fully automated channel, this led to the popularity of a show called '60 seconds' where they gave a news bulletin of the day within 60 seconds meaning they cut out the complications with live and varied length news shows. BBC3 was soon cut from regular TV in 2014 and was made an online channel, this came with lots of backlash with many celebrities saying that they are killing the channel and how it is only bad for the comedy section on BBC. But by moving to an online channel it allowed BBC to make BBC3 a channel with more varied genres of shows. BBC3 now tackle concepts such a sex, drugs and convicted killers, all which fit in to the crime genre. This specific genre is popular with older teens and younger adults as they are more exposed to these topics so the attraction to these shows are high. The channel is known for producing transgressive content which other channels may not touch to protect there corporation and reputation.

Since moving to an online platform the estimated weekly viewing figures for BBC3 for the ages 16 - 34 is around 11.2 million a week. This has increased from there estimated 6.5 million weekly estimated views when they were a broadcasted channel. This increase in viewership is most likely down to it being an online channel in which more younger people have access to or are more likely to watch as online platforms are seemingly way more popular than broadcasted TV.

What is the definition of a television drama?

A television drama is a show where a series of real life situations are exaggerated but still relatable, through the use of themes, settings, issues and narratives. All for the audiences entertainment. examples of TV dramas by the BBC are Downton abbey, Doctor Who, and Eastenders.
